The District of Columbia outdistances all the 50 states for the salaries web design professionals earn. In Washington, D.C. the mean annual wage is $66,560. The four closest states are California ($55,670), New York ($54,920), Connecticut ($53,500) and Maryland ($51,380).
These figures are for salaried web designers; they do not include the earnings of the 25-30 percent of web designers who are self-employed. Freelance web designers enjoy the freedom and flexibility of being their own bosses and scheduling their own time, but they sacrifice the security of employment. Their salaries typically fluctuate; they may earn much more or much less than designers with regular jobs.

This chart displays annual mean salaries for Web Designers in the U.S. The data was collected by the Bureau of Labor Statistics OES - May 2008.
Web designers earn their salaries by creating the pages that make up a website. They do this by balancing words, images, and function, which means they need to have communication skills, graphic design skills, and computer skills. They may start their careers with a background in any or all of these skill sets. Web designers are more concerned with how web pages look than how they work, however, so they typically do not have to have the same computer expertise as do web developers. Web designers usually don’t have to build web programs or applications, but that depends on the job responsibilities.
There is no single path to a career in web design. Designers may learn their craft through college courses or hands-on experience or they may teach themselves. With web design employability is more about the ability to do the work than the degree.
