Most employers prefer to hire a web designer with at least a bachelor’s degree in graphic design, media, visual arts, computer science, or related fields—but a degree is not always necessary if the applicant can demonstrate skills in web design. Employers will look for portfolios that demonstrate applicants’ artistic ability and facility with graphic design software. Specialized skills in, for example, multimedia design, search engine optimization, accessibility, and interface design are an advantage in the competition for web design jobs.
Because of new media, changing products and standards, and rapidly evolving technology, web designers need to constantly update their skills. Lifelong learning is part of the job description. Certification can help web designers get jobs, get promotions, and keep their jobs. Online and campus-based training in HTML, XHTML, XML, Coldfusion, flash animation, and related topics give web designers a competitive edge.
